How do I rename a file or folder?

You can rename any file or folder in your Dropbox through the desktop application or the website. You can also rename shared folders, but it's important to note that this change will not reflect in the Dropbox of other members. This is mostly to avoid confusion as a result of reorganizing and renaming shared folders without their knowledge.

On the Dropbox website On the Dropbox website

  1. Sign in to the Dropbox website.
  2. Right-click on the folder you'd like to rename.
  3. Select Rename.

On desktops, rename the file or folder as you normally would. For example, select the file, wait a second, and re-click on the file name to edit it.

On all files and folders except shared folders, the new name will propagate across all of your computers, phones, and tablets linked to your Dropbox account.

A note about shared links

Renaming files that you've shared a link to with others will break the link. Visitors to the link will receive an error informing them that the link is no longer active. To resume sharing the file, you'll have to give the file its original name or create a new link.
